PC Gamers Are Tired Of Console Ports

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is a vivid example of the PC gamer being treated with less respect than the console gamer. Unique features that the PC gamer has come to expect over the years, such as dedicated servers were left out. When Infinity Ward made that announcement gamers united across the internet and started a boycott. Unfortunately for their effort, solidarity wilted and most of the boycotters went ahead and bought the game.
Sales were extremely good for the pc version of MW2 and that success might tend to tell Activision that PC gamers will buy what they are given, no matter what. I hope that isn’t the case, but at the end of the day they are a company trying to make a profit for their share holders. My guess is that PC gamers merely accepted what they were given because it was that or nothing.
What this whole thing shows, to me, is that PC gamers are as divided as just about any other demographic you can think of. Sure, they talked a good game but when it came down to it they backed off and bought Modern Warfare 2 for the PC. I wasn’t a part of the boycott but I bought the game as well, so at the very least you can’t call me a hypocrite.
One other thing that was a sore spot was the fact that the pc version of MW2 was essentially exactly the same as the console versions. Infinity Ward treated the PC as a third console. Sure the game looks a lot better but it’s the same as the xbox 360 version. An inexcusable carry over from the console is the tiny online player limit. I understand why you have to do something like that for the PS3, but not for the PC.
It’s time for pc gamers to demand better, to effectively “vote” for the kinds of features we want with our dollars. Buy games that are PC specific or at least provide features that consoles don’t have because the PC isn’t as limited as the Xbox 360 or PS3 hardware wise.
